My first long-term relationship was with a girl named Elena whom I had pursued unsuccessfully for years. Her about-face was startling, but I wasn't gonna argue. She gave me a rose once, and of course I kept it.
A couple of years after that relationship ended, I found myself in one of those no-light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel situations. One evening I came across a box of paraphernalia from my time with Elena. Inside was said rose, perfectly preserved - a tangible reminder that I had once beaten impossible odds to get what I wanted. And if you can do something once, can't you do it again?
