I Screwed Up

about

A holiday original.

I wanted to write a big ol' goofy Christmas tune in the Phil Spector tradition; start it off properly somber and then kick it off the deep end! Joey Ramone really dug this song and wanted to sing on it, but sadly time ran out before that could come to pass. I saw no reason to continue working on the track without Joey - who else could have pulled off this cameo? "I Screwed Up" sat on my shelf for years, but I stumbled on it again eventually and realized that I like the tune too much to leave it in the dark forever, so here it is with me covering Joey's lines... consider this "Bowery Electric" part 1-A.

lyrics

The sun revolves around the earth
The sun exists to feed the earth
The sun goes out without the earth
So sit at home and wait for me to call

And when it's over
All I've got are these stupid metaphors
And I screwed up
And I know it
You don't owe me anything
What good is it to know it all
When the knowing doesn't change a thing?
And I screwed up
It's not funny
You don't know me anymore
And what good is a lesson learned
When there's no one here to learn it for?
I screwed up.

Baby
I know
I know what usually happens in this part of the song.
This is the part where the guy with the really deep voice comes on
And he... he quotes Alexander Pope.
He says, "Baby, in the words of the esteemed
Alexander Pope,
To err is human
To forgive, divine."
And we both know how divine you are.
So I just know you'll take me back someday.
But until that day baby, please...
Please stop screening your phone calls, baby!
Aw, it's just no good
You don't wanna hear my voice
Any more than you wanna see my face.
So I picked up the phone
I called my pal Joey Ramone
And I begged him to plead my case:

"He screwed up
And he knows it
You don't owe him anything
What good is it to know it all
When the knowing doesn't change a thing?
And he screwed up
It's not funny
He don't know you anymore
And what good is a lesson learned
When there's no one here to learn it for?
He screwed up."

Well the morning comes without the sun
Oh baby, I can't see a thing
I'm thinking I may never find my way out of this bed
When the telephone starts to ring
I let it ring 1-2-
1-2-3-4 times before I say hello
And Joey says, "I'm sorry, man -
It didn't go as planned -
Our first date is tomorrow."

Oh, the worst part is
That this all happened
At Christmas.

Joey Ramone stole my baby at Christmas.

I screwed up
And I know it
You don't owe me anything
What good is it to know it all
When the knowing doesn't change a thing?
And I screwed up
It's not funny
You don't know me anymore
And what good is a lesson learned
When there's no one here to learn it for?
I screwed up.
